Biographical Text
Short bio:
Laurel has been bellydancing since 2005 and absolutely loves the music, the celebration of the female form, and sisterhood of the dance. She regularly performs at restaurants and nightclubs in Portland, and has placed in two regional competitions. When not bellydancing, she studies Nurse-Midwifery at OHSU, and volunteers. You can find her online at www.laurelbellydance.com.
Extended bio:
Laurel first saw bellydance while visiting Disney's Epcot Center when she was five years old, and was captivated by the sparkling, zill-playing woman in the Moroccan Pavilion. Laurel grew up in northern Indiana, studying gymnastics and ballet, laying a foundation of movement knowledge; and studied piano, flute, and voice for years, toning her musical ear. She began bellydancing in 2005 with Troupe Salamat in Arizona, and studied for several years with Melanie Wade and Leila Gamal in Indiana. From those first classes, she knew that bellydance was to be a lifelong passion. The sisterhood, inner strength, and celebration of the female form are truly incredible gifts of this dance.
Since moving to Portland in 2007, Laurel has been blessed with a wealth of dance mentors and friends, and regularly performs at nightclubs and restaurants in the area. She has performed on the Gypsy Caravan Stage at Oregon Country Fair, danced with many distinguished musicians in Portland and New York City, and collaborated with local artists for events such as AMP Theater's Arabian Nights, Oregon Renaissance Festival, and the OMSI Gala. Known for her elegance and musicality, Laurel was awarded First Runner Up American Ambassador in the 2013 International Ambassador of Bellydance Competition, and Second Runner Up in the Live Professional Category of the 2014 La Danse Orientale Belly Dance Competition.
Laurel holds a bachelor's degree in English and History from Goshen College, a second bachelor's degree in Nursing from OHSU, and is currently studying Nurse-Midwifery at OHSU. In her spare time, she volunteers with PDX Doulas, teaches holistic self-defense classes with the Portland Police Bureau's WomenStrength program, and hikes in the Columbia Gorge. You can find her online at www.laurelbellydance.com.
